Bear Trail

Valles del Oso, Asturias

For almost eighty years a mining railway carried coal down from the Teverga and Quirós valleys to the steelworks at Trubia. It closed in 1963, the tracks were abandoned, and in 1995 the regional government turned them into a greenway. Today you cycle along its course through more than thirty tunnels cut into the rock and limestone gorges where the walls almost touch, as far as the enclosure where Molina lives, a Cantabrian brown bear in semi-freedom.
